Breathe in for the first 5 seconds (0–4), breathe out for the next 5 (5–9). The ring and number change color at the midpoint. Music plays only while a session is running and this tab is open.

What is HRV breathing?

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the natural variation in time between heartbeats. HRV breathing — also called coherent breathing or resonance-frequency breathing — is a simple paced-breathing exercise used in HRV biofeedback (HRVB) practice. Slowing your breath to around six breaths per minute, roughly a 5-second inhale followed by a 5-second exhale, is the pace most commonly cited for coherent breathing. HRVTimer paces that exact 10-second cycle for you, so you can focus on the breath instead of counting.

How to use this HRV timer

Press Start and follow the ring: it fills over exactly 10 seconds and changes color at the midpoint. Breathe in as the number climbs from 0 to 4, and breathe out from 5 to 9. Turn on the beep or the spoken count if you want an audio cue instead of watching the screen, and use the total-time stopwatch to track how long you've practiced. A 5–20 minute session is a common starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5-second inhale and 5-second exhale a good HRV breathing pattern?

Yes — a 5-second inhale and 5-second exhale makes a 10-second cycle, or six breaths per minute, which is the rate most widely used for coherent and resonance-frequency breathing. Everyone's personal resonance frequency varies slightly, but this pace is a well-established starting point.

How long should I practice HRV breathing for?

Many people start with 5–20 minute sessions, once or twice a day. HRVTimer's total-time counter makes it easy to see how long you've been going without breaking your focus.

Does HRVTimer collect or store my data?

No. Everything — the timer, the ambient sound, the voice count — runs locally in your browser. There's no account, no analytics, and no audio is ever recorded or transmitted.

Is HRVTimer free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
